Transporting heavy machines such as large plant equipment, industrial generators, turbines and rigs can be a complex and risky task. It is especially so since the dimensions of these machines make it impossible for them to be transported by standard trailers. In most cases, you will need to transport them as an oversized load. Below are a few of the considerations to make when transporting heavy machinery.

Work With An Experienced Company

As a rule, you should work with a company that understands what it takes to move oversized loads. The primary benefit of these companies is that they can anticipate and avoid a wide range of heavy haulage services. Inquire about the company's availability and inspect the truck that they will use to move your load. This truck must be in excellent condition.

Consider The Legalities Of Heavy Machinery Transport

You will need a permit from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) to use the various roads. Additional licenses are required when crossing to another state or if you will access Aboriginal land. You will also need police escorts to control traffic as you pass through busy urban centres. Most states restrict the movement of oversized loads. More often than not, you will have a narrow time frame (between sunset and sunrise) to transport your load.

Choose An Appropriate Route

Below are some considerations to make when choosing an appropriate route:

  • Are oversized loads permitted to use the road? Check the gross vehicle mass (GVM) of the vehicle to know what roads you can use.
  • What are the risks on the intended route? It could be low-lying electric cables and bridges, street lights, poor weather or sharp corners. Conduct a cost-benefit analysis to determine which risks can be controlled or avoided.
  • How wide is the road? The oversized load occupies considerable space on the road. As such, you need to ensure that oncoming traffic can safely pass the truck. Otherwise, you will cause traffic snarl-ups.
  • Does the route have appropriate stopping points? It is an important consideration when transporting machinery for long distances. The convoy will park during the day and wait till sunset.

Execution

Assess the load to determine an appropriate loading, transport and offloading method. For instance, you could require a crane to load and unload the truck. In some cases, you could need to dismantle the load or transport it using two trucks. Observe safety on the road. For example, you should have pilot vehicles to control traffic.

When transporting heavy machinery, work with an experienced company, assess haulage laws, choose an appropriate route and consider the recommended execution tips. For more information, contact a heavy machinery transport service.
